Written and hosted by Marc Fennell, It Burns is the story of a 10-year scandal-plagued international competition that will take listeners from the Australian Coast to South Carolina (via an Indian Research Facility). It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record. In the process of charting the scandal-plagued race to breed the world’s hottest chilli, the audio documentary lifts the lid on the subculture of ‘Chilli-heads’, hardcore chilli fans spread across the globe who compete in chilli eating and breeding competitions. The internet is filled with videos of grown men being reduced to tears by a square millimetre of chilli. The docu-series asks: what motivates someone to breed and eat a demonic nugget that is so hot it no longer has flavour? At what point does this stop being cuisine and start being an endurance sport? This humorous series shows that all this has never really been about chilli. It’s been about how people use pain to shape themselves, define themselves and make themselves feel alive. This series contains mature themes and graphic imagery, and listener discretion is advised. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Marc Fennell. And every 4 years we get the pleasure to watch amateur athletes, at the top of their game, compete in the Olympics. And that got us thinking about competition. Because that’s what it’s about, right? A brilliant new BBC Radio 4 series of comedy travelogues presented by award-winning stand-up and ´´Just a Minute´´ regular Ross Noble. Perrier Award nominee Ross Noble has received huge critical acclaim and become known as an exciting and original talent in the UK. Now he takes his show worldwide, to destinations as diverse as Australia, Italy, Egypt and Belgium by day and entertaining the locals with his microphone by night. In the first episode, Ross travels to Brussels, a city with a reputation a little on the dull side. But he soon finds out that with chocolate on every corner, a puzzling statue of an incontinent child, and the honour of being associated with the always-exciting Jean-Claude Van Damme, Brussels might be his kind of city after all. Half hilarious stand-up routines, half cultural observations, these shows are both a tempting taster of the cities he visits and a perfect opportunity to spend some time in the wacky, whimsical, fantastically funny world of Ross Noble. 1. The annual comics extravaganza Comic-Con International is underway, with 125,000 fans geeking out at the San Diego Convention Center. And that doesn’t count all the film and TV stars on hand to court them: from Robert Downey, Jr., talking up Iron Man 3 to HBO producers peddling Game of Thrones. Next, it isn’t easy to put a fresh spin on A Streetcar Named Desire, one of the most acclaimed plays in American theatre, with its caricatured Brando scream of ´´Stella!” A new production on Broadway aims to shake things up, putting black and Latino actors in the lead roles. Then, a couple years ago, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for directing The Hurt Locker. It wasn’t quite the tipping point for women many in the industry had hoped for: of the 250 major movies that came out last year in the US, women directed only 5% of them. But when it comes to commercial and critical breakthroughs among independent films, a shift seems to be happening. After that, a couple weeks ago, the music critic Tim Page posted a shortlist on Facebook of ´´perfectly good music that I never need to hear again.” He included Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, acts 1, 2, and 4 of Puccini’s La Boheme, Dave Brubeck’s ´´Take Five,´´ and the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper´s Lonely Heart´s Club Band. And finally, Dirty Projectors manage to be both avant-garde and accessible — the band plays experimental rock you can still dance to. They’ve collaborated with Bjork and David Byrne, and been covered by Solange Knowles (sister of Beyonce). [Broadcast Date: July 14, 2012] 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kurt Andersen.
